So you finally decided to get the lower eyelid surgery and now you wonder, what can you expect during your procedure?

You will first meet with your surgeon for a consultation. All options will be discussed. This discussion should also include possible risks involved. The day of the surgery you will most likely be given the anesthesia either before entering the surgical room, if you are in a hospital, or in the surgical unit if this is in another type facility. Once the procedure begins the surgeon will make an incision along the lash line. Next, the surgeon will remove any excessive fat and the muscle and skin will be removed. Once this is completed the surgeon will use sutures to close the area. The stitches will be removed within a few days, as your surgeon determines. Generally, depending on the amount of material that needs to be removed, as well as the procedure the surgeon uses, the entire operation will take three to five hours.

The surgeon will usually lubricate your eyes. The ointment s/he applies is to reduce the dryness. This may cause some blurred vision although it is just temporary. The surgeon will suggest you take it easy the first evening as well as keep your head elevated. You will have less pain if you apply cold compresses. The surgeon will also suggest you limit your activity.

Generally, the patient has some mild pain for a couple of days. This is generally felt around the eyes. The pain can usually be alleviated with some type of pain pill. When you look in the mirror you will be a more youthful you and this will last for a long time.
